I really like your statement of "no rules in buddhism but I think these are practical suggestions for the comfort & safety of the Gohonzon and members"!
I also heard in some places not but place the gohonzon infront of a window even though you don't use the window and blinds are shut and have curtains (I won't place the gohonzon infront of a window if i lived in a place that may have earthquakes?) just using common sense. i even know somone whose cat sprays in the house so a member made a butsudan that almost shape like a picuture frame where you can place the gohonzon in it and is protected by glass.

Over here in the UK the guidence is that the character myo on the gohonzon should be just above eye level. Of course, if you are having meetings at your home, you dont want your head to obscure the gohonzon from the members. We are also advised not to hang the butsudan on the wall, but rather to place it on a solid base connected to the floor so that it is connected to the kyo of the earth and to make sure that it doesn't accidently drop onto the floor. Also we are discouraged from placing pictures, clocks or other objects above the gohonzon so as not to cause any distractions while chanting. Of course there are no rules in buddhism but I think these are practical suggestions for the comfort and safety of the gohonzon and the members.

ooooooooooops hit the wrong button...
anyways i know the butsudan should be set up high enough so that when looking at the gohonzon you are looking at it just above eye level, basically being natural and comfortable. It should not be set low to where you are looking down on the gohonzon. any comments on this? i've seen some butsudan's set up even on this website site that looks a little low. what's your suggestions?

Greetings all!

I am having a friend build a butsudan for me and have a question regarding it.

Is it necessary to have the little shade at the top on the inside as well as it having the gold foil on the inside back?

I forgot to tell him about these things and it is already done and looks great. Just needs some stain :)

Thanks in advance!
